MARRIAGE IN POLAND - WHAT KIND OF CEREMONY  YOU CAN HAVE

If you would like to get married in Poland you must be aware that like in any other country, you need proper documentation. Marriage in Poland can be contracted in two methods as:

- a Civil Ceremony performed at the USC – the Civil Registry Office or outsite the Civil Registry Office.

Important: For a marriage to be recognized by law in Poland, it must be registered at the USC. The USC (registry office) draws up a marriage certificate confirming the validity of the union.

- a Church Ceremony (eg. in a Catholic)

Poland recognizes the marriage ceremony performed according to tradition and religion. Such marriages can be recognized by the registered office in Poland without the need of having a separate civil marriage. This type of marriage in Poland is also known as concordat marriage.

DOCUMENTS NEEDES FOR MARRIAGE IN POLAND

For a couple to get married in Poland, specific documents are needed, such as:

  • Documents confirming the identity of the persons intending to get married (Passport). It is mandatory to include a picture.
  • A copy of the birth certificate ( a sworn translation into Polish by one of the sworn translators on the list published by the Polish Ministry of Justice ).
  • Persons who have previously been married are required to attach documents certifying their current civil status and full capacity to get married.
  • A document certifying they are free to marry, issued in their country of origin. This document has to be with a sworn translation into the Polish language (the said document certifies that under the law of his or her country of citizenship, the foreign national  is permitted to contract a marriage in Poland.  If a foreigner cannot obtain such document, for example, if the country of residence does not issue such type of documents, then the respective person has the right to submit a court permit that relieves him of this obligation.
