Wedding in Poland by Dorota Nowakowska Wedding Planner

When the day comes to organizing the wedding in Poland, the future bride and groom must create an accurate and detailed cost estimate for the ceremony. Therefore, if you are wondering how much the church wedding, civil wedding or symbolic wedding in Poland costs, I’m here to help you. I’ll write everything down in black and white, how much and to whom you have to pay, and what exactly should be taken into account to calculate the total cost of the wedding.

Wedding and reception: How much does the church wedding in Poland cost?

As a Wedding Planner in Poland I’m organizing weddings ceremonies and weddings receptions for many years, therefore I am not surprised that priests charge for the sacraments. It is often a problem for a future bride and groom that the so-called "Pay what you will" does not work in many parishes and priests present a definite price list to fiancés. Unfortunately, "wedding-related services" often have fixed prices which are often exorbitant. It is also true that in some parishes, priests do not actually require payment, and the offering is absolutely voluntary. Therefore, it is difficult to determine what is the cost of church wedding in Poland.

In the situation that prices are available, they range from 800 zloty to even 3000 zloty. It all depends on the parish and, in most of the cases, whether the parish is in a small or a big city. The average amounts I usually came across are:
  • 800 zloty for mass (in historic churches in bigger cities 1000 - 2000 zloty for example as the church wedding in Krakow)
  • 200 - 350 zloty for an organist and another 150 zloty for a ecclesial.
It happens very often that additional costs are also added on top of the above mentioned expenses, including flowers and wedding decorations. In some parishes you can pay from 300 to 600 zloty and if you decide to hire your own florist, you have to reckon with further spendings.

Furthermore, it happens on many occasions, that you must pay for banns of marriage which are valid only for 6 months. Price range from 50 to 200 złoty. It is worth emphasizing that prior to the conclusion church wedding, you should also take a premarital course. And although the fees are individual and dependent on the parish, when organizing a wedding ceremony and a wedding reception, one should expect that, for example, for a wedding in the Warsaw Old Town, you can pay about 3000 zloty, for a wedding in Krakow, approx. 2000 zloty, and for wedding in Gdansk and wedding in Wroclaw - 1500 złoty. Sometimes, however differently, and even in those cities you can meet up with lower pricing proposals.

And how much does a civil marriage in Poland cost?

By opting for a civil wedding in Poland, a great advantage is the unification of costs, which in practice means that they are the same amounts, regardless of the Civil Registry Office. A fixed stamp duty is charged for drawing up a marriage certificate - its cost is 84 złoty.

In some cases (eg after a divorce), abridged copy of certificates or documents will be needed - their cost is 22 złoty. If the fiancés are not keen on waiting for the civil marriage, which usually takes a month since documents are completed, they can pay the accelerating ceremony a fee of 39 PLN. Polish citizens, who plan to get married outside of Poland are obliged do settle Special fees in amount of 38 złoty.

The additional fee is also associated with a civil wedding outdoors - 1000 złoty. If during the wedding the wedding couple wishes that the ceremony should be accompanied by music, an additional cost of about 300 - 2000 złoty should be borne.

At international marriages, there are also costs associated with the translation of documents and the engagement of a sworn translator during the wedding ceremony.

Or maybe you're planning a symbolic wedding and wondering how much it costs?

The cheapest wedding turns out to be a symbolic wedding in Poland. In this case, you do not have to pay any mandatory or official fees. The only real cost is to pay for the celebrant, the master of the ceremony, who will preside over a wedding. However, in case of such events, it can be eg. a family member or a friend, and therefore, the costs associated with the organization of the symbolic wedding in Poland can be reduced to a minimum.

When preparing for the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception in Poland, you have a lot of things to worry about. In the sheer volume of obligations and formalities related to the organization of the wedding in Poland, you should pay special attention to the contract signed with the wedding venue - the place where the wedding reception is planned. Here are a some tips on how to sign a document and do not regret it later, as well as how to sign a document and get everything in line with our expectations? See below.

What should I consider before signing a contract with a wedding venue?

After choosing a wedding place of your dreams, you usually set the details of the reservation with its owner (or representative).

First thing  you should  ask the owner or representative is an availability of the date of the wedding ceremony in the venue of your dreams.  As a rule, an advance payment is made at this time. This is the cost associated with the reservation and unfortunately you only get confirmation of this payment. It has nothing to do with the contract, which is a document between the parties for specific services.
At this stage, you must carefully read the reservation agreement several times and if you have doubts, of course, negotiate. Pay attention to:

- Parties: people who sign a contract. On one hand, the fiancés, on the other, the owner of the premises or his representative. You should check the correctness of the data, to be 100% sure that you are dealing with the right person.

- Type of event - place and time: each contract must be considered that it is the contract for the organization of the wedding, because the organizer has different responsibilities during various receptions. It must be described here when bride and groom arrive and when the guests. Also here should be indicated, for example from what time the waiter service begins.

- Cost: usually this is cost per person, which is why it is necessary to find out if it will be possible to accept a larger number of guests and make additional payments for them (if there is possibility of housing, usually there’s no problem with that).

- Determination of what the cost includes: the best practice here is to write it out exactly, what the organizer takes into account in the costs, so that there will be no surprises later. At the end, I will put some points that you should definitely ask about. Seemingly trivial, they can save your pocket.

- Obligations of the parties: The organizer usually ensures: choosing menus (served at specific times), waiter service up to determined hour, room setting (chairs, tables, tablecloths), the possibility of connecting the sound system and instruments for the band, as well as aprtment for newlyweds .

- Damages: weddings can be boisterous, that is why it is worth asking - who takes responsibility for it, whether it will be necessary to pay extra for damages, or what is the definitione of „damage” – is it destruction of the chair or breakage of the glass, etc.

Remember that upon signing the contract with the wedding venue, an advance or down payment is paid. Under the law, having a contract - deposit is returned, but the down payment is not.

Below there are a few questions that will help you organize your wedding in Poland and save you a lot of trouble:

  • When is the menu set? (how many days / weeks in advance)
  • Is the parking paid separately?
  • Does the price of the wedding include an apartment for newlyweds, or maybe for wedding guests as well? What is the room rate for wedding guests?
  • Alcohol – is it available on site or you should organize it yourselves? Is there a fee for bringing your own alcohol (so-called "cork")?
  • Wedding cake, caks, fruit - if NOT included in the price (you have to ask for without a doubt), should you buy them yourself or are they available on site?
  • Will the food that will be left after the ceremony be taken with you?
  • Is the wedding dinner and hot meals are served to guests for tables or put on a separate table (in the form of a buffet).
  • Do you pay for a musical setting, a photographer and a cameraman equally like for extra guests, or, for example, for a half of the cost of a guest for them"? (as an example, for an orchestra of 4 people, we pay extra for four people, sometimes for two, and sometimes you can determine yourself how much food will be allocated to the orchestra).
  • Is the decorative bread included in the price?
  • Is the first glass of champagne included in the price to welcome the bride and groom and guests?
  • Is a fee charged for broken glasses? In some venues even PLN 10 has to be paid for breaking ONE glass.
  • Is there air-conditioning?
  • What is the table setting - can you suggest the layout yourself, if not - which layout is proposed?
  • Decoration of premises and tables - is it included in the price, if not how much it costs?
  • What is check-out time for newlyweds and their guests? (usually late check-out is available without additional charges.
  • How much should I deposit in order to book a date? (NOTE - from 2000 PLN to even 15,000 PLN!).
  • How much money (what percentage of the whole amount) should be paid before the wedding? (usually around 80%- 100%).
It's good to ask if the permises have pictures from past weddings – it’s always better to look at already decorated tables, decorations and colors.

It is also good to pay attention to the dance floor. Is there enough room for the number of guests that will be entertaining on it. Besides, if it is not too slippery.
